Emerald Wallet is a desktop app that is a non-custodial or self custody wallet for crypto assets.
"Non-custodial" or "self custody" means that users hold their private keys themselves through Emerald, therefore they control their crypto assets directly on the blockchain.
Inside the app there are several levels in which crypto assets are contained and organized: Wallets, blockchains, and accounts or addresses. In this post we explain these concepts.
1. What is a wallet inside Emerald?
Inside Emerald, users may create many wallets.
Emerald wallets are like containers where you may have several blockchains and crypto assets. Below is an example of 4 wallets created on Emerald where some have Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Ethereum Classic and one has only Bitcoin, for example.
2. What is a blockchain?
A blockchain is a decentralized cryptocurrency network.
Below you will see that in the wallet 3 we have Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Ethereum Classic, which are blockchains. Inside Ethereum, we also support some stablecoins such as USDT, USDC, and DAI.
3. What is an account?
An account or address are the same thing, they are just different names.
An address is like a bank account, but inside a blockchain and you control them with your private keys, which are encrypted and secure inside Emerald.
On your address on the blockchain you hold all your crypto assets such as BTC, ETH, ETC, USDT, USDC, DAI, NFTs, and more.
4. What is an address?
As said above, an address is another term for an account on a blockchain. In the private and public key pair model, the address is actually your public key, which is associated to your private key. Again, it is just different names for the same thing.
Below you may see how addresses look and will notice they may have different formats depending on the blockchain.
Bitcoin address format:

Ethereum address format:
0x5be6ce1b0b91764b0dceb5bd32643693a5873cca
Ethereum Classic address format (same as Ethereum):
0x978B158c282A5C97a1eD2F03377f62F3D8E69fDa
